Calatheas are known for their big paddle leaves with bold patterns. There are approximately 60 varieties of calatheas, each one just as mesmerizing as the last. They are praised for being tolerant of low light conditions, making them excellent choices for offices and houses without a lot of natural light. A popular variety is the rattlesnake calathea, a cultivar with long, wavy leaves with chevron patterns and red undersides. Its leaves grow in a cool whirlpool swirl, sure to catch your eye! These plants crave humidity and can easily brown if they are not getting their fill. Consider finding a home for one in your bathroom if you’re too busy to keep up on misting. The steam from your shower will create the perfect humid microclimate for this beauty to thrive in.
Native to the tropical rainforests of central and south America, notably Brazil, calatheas are used to warm, moist air, filtered sunlight from the tree canopies and soil rich with organic matter. They can tolerate drying out a little between waterings, but don’t let them go for too long. Calatheas can be divas when their needs are not met, and will be particularly unforgiving to neglect.
