Ah the Pothos. Is there any houseplant more loveable? Affordable, reliable, fast-growing and stress-free. If you want a vine to trail around your curtain rods in little time with little effort, this is your best bet! While seasoned houseplant owners may turn their attention towards flashier specimens, there’s no reason to throw shade towards this superstar! With over 60 unique cultivars varying in color, shape, and pattern, Pothos are truly the houseplants that keep on giving.
You’ll find Pothos, or Epipremnum aureum all over the globe, growing naturally in China, Southeast Asia and Australia, to name a few. They have hand-sized heart shaped leaves that unfold rapidly off of cascading stems. Keep them upright by trimming the vines periodically, or encourage vining with trellises and moss poles. Or let them trail down from the top of a shelf or cupboard. No plant looks better in a macrame hanger than a Pothos, truly.
There could not be an easier plant to care for, nor a more forgiving one! If you neglect watering it for too long, it will begin to flag, simply as a warning. Water it and worry no more! They’ll like a drink about once a week to every 10 days. Left it in a low light location? Don’t worry, pothos are tolerant of almost all lighting situations. A North, East, or even South window will do, as long as direct sun doesn’t fry the leaves all day. They respond well to grow lights if you have little natural light in your house too! A regular indoor potting soil is a perfectly adequate substrate. It couldn’t get any easier!

Pothos are extremely easy to propagate. Look along your Pothos vine for scabby nodes that stick out. Often another leaf will be growing out of one. Simply snip a 5 inch section off below that node and stick it in a clear jar of water. Over a few weeks, roots will develop, and once a couple of 2-3”+ roots have formed, it’s ready to be potted in a small container! Be careful not to let all the water evaporate from your propagation jar or your nice new roots will dry up!
Popular Pothos varieties include neon, n’joy, cebu blue and marble queen. Neon Pothos have incredible almost fluorescent yellow foliage, brightening up any space immediately. N’joy Pothos are splattered with white and green splotches, like a neat tropical camouflage. Cebu blues have slender leaves and a deep blue-green sheen. Marble queens have gorgeous striations of light green shooting across each leaf. There’s so many options to choose from, it’s hard to pick just one favorite!
