Lipstick Plant

The botanical name for this beauty is a bit of a mouthful….Aeschynanthus radicans. That’s es-keh-nan-thus rad-ih-kans. Or as most of us common plant nerds say, the lipstick plant. This lipstick plant variety is called a black pagoda. For new plant lovers and professionals alike this houseplant is a trusty one to have in your collection. Even for those with curious cats or mischievous pups as this plant is safe for all to enjoy. Though that is no invitation for you furballs reading this over your parents shoulder!

Black pagodas enjoy a nice warm location in your house with as much direct sun as they can get. A South facing window in a room that stays cozy in the winter is perfect for these guys. They are spillers, not really climbers at all. Their overall length can be a choice just like your own haircuts. You can let them grow long enough to touch the floor or chop and prop to keep a nice full bob! They can take a little longer to put roots out than their Pothos buddies but if you give the cuttings time you will usually see roots begin to grow within a few weeks.  Just be sure to change out the water once a week so that it stays fresh. Filtered water is the best for new cuttings.

Once the roots are in good supply and long enough to provide stability, get them planted into a pot and increase your collection! Or of course you can share the wealth! Should you choose to share, your recipients will likely quickly admire the striking underside of the leaf that when light shines through really brings out the beauty. Kind of like the way our favorite lipstick can make us feel when we want it to.
