If your aesthetic is simple, sturdy and straightforward, the clusia is the houseplant for you. Clusia rosea, named after the botanist Carolus Clusius, is a bushy tropical with thick, smooth, succulent-like paddles. Native to the neotropical regions of North and South America, they are often planted as privacy hedges due to their fullness and fast growth rate.
Sometimes it is referred to as an autograph tree as it has the unique ability to be etched with names or messages that will stay on the leaves as long as it lives! Legend has it that clusia leaves were historically used as playing cards in the West Indies.
The clusia grows best in humidity and bright sunlight, such as a south facing window, though it can tolerate a shadier spot in your home if necessary. Do make sure it’s protected from cool drafts as it loves to be warm and cozy! It begins life as an epiphyte, growing off of a host plant, so it will appreciate a soil mix that’s full of orchid bark to mimic that environment. Where do you find orchid bark you may ask? We sell it in bulk at Moonfire!
In addition to its water filled leaves, you’ll notice it develops large, sturdy roots quickly, used to store water during periods of drought. This means you won’t have to water it frequently. Wait for the soil to dry out completely in between drinks.
Note that clusias are toxic to pets. If you have a curious pet known for taking a nibble from your houseplants this may not be the right plant for you.
