Coffea arabica or the Arabian coffee plant is for the java lovers out there! This is the dominant species grown for coffee production all over the world. It grows natively only in South Ethiopia and Yemen. Arab scholars were the first to record the benefits of coffee, highlighting that it prolonged their working hours!
It has lovely waxy green leaves with deep veins and wavy edges. After flowering, it will produce little pink cherries that turn red when ripe. Inside are seeds, or coffee beans! One berry only produces at most two coffee beans, so don’t expect to be able to start your own coffee business with one plant.
As long as you provide enough humidity, sunlight and don’t fall into the habit of overwatering, your coffee plant could grow up to 7 feet tall! Provide bright light from an east, south or west window. An unobstructed view of the sky is going to keep those beautiful green leaves vibrant. Set them in the sink or a tub and let them soak up water from the bottom. Wait until the first quarter of the pot is dry before you water again.
Just like cacti, coffee plants like acidity, so it’s a great idea to mix in some cactus soil with regular indoor potting soil. This will create the perfect balance of moisture retention and good drainage! Fertilize in the spring and summer months with a liquid plant food to keep it stocked up on essential nutrients. This will aid in flower and berry production as well! Re-pot every 1-2 years when the roots start poking out of the pot’s drainage holes.
