Araucaria heterophylla
You’ll want to make sure you have the space for these bad boys. Along the coast of California Norfolk Island Pines can grow up to 100ft tall. On their native island east of Australia they have been recorded to mature to twice the size of our American dwellers. Don’t panic as you look at the now small Norfolk you may have recently purchased though. In your home they will likely achieve a height of around 15 feet.
Like most coastal natives, Norfolk pines appreciate humidity. If you don’t have a humidifier at home just be sure to mist these trees once a week. Have a large bathroom with high ceilings and a skylight? That would be home sweet home for a Norfolk. Be sure not to let them dry out either. Our regimen here at the nursery is to water halfway through the week and then mist at the end. That way, each week they are getting both watered and misted. We also keep a closer eye on them when the heat is running to ensure they don’t dry out too quickly or for too long. Once a Norfolk has been forgotten long enough to start looking, part it can be hard to get them back from the brink of death. Superthrive and re-establishing a regular water routine is your only hope. We sell a 4oz bottle of the amazing Superthrive nutrient formula. It is mostly B1 which helps plants survive even the most shocking of near-death experiences.
This houseplant can easily double as a living Christmas tree for the holidays. They look fantastic decked out with lights and ornaments. The best part is that each year the tree will inevitably grow larger so family photos can be fun to compare over the years. Not interested in holiday decorating? You’re not alone! With their soft feathery limbs these wonderful trees look fantastic just as naked as the day they were born! Take one home to make an instant impact to the indoor forest you may so aspire to create.
